When your Air Conditioning stops cooling, it’s easy to assume something major has failed—but often, it’s something simple you can check yourself. This quick checklist helps you rule out common issues before scheduling a service call.

Check the Thermostat

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to COOL.
  • Lower the temperature setting at least 3–5 degrees below the current room temperature.
  • Replace thermostat batteries if the screen is blank or fading.
  • Confirm the thermostat display is working properly.

Check the Air Filter

  • Inspect the air filter.
  • A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow and cause the system to stop cooling properly.
  • Replace the filter if it appears dirty.
  • Make sure the filter is installed correctly.

Verify Power to the System

  • Check the indoor furnace/air handler switch.
  • Confirm the outdoor air conditioning disconnect is ON.
  • Check your electrical panel for tripped breakers.
  • Reset tripped breakers one time only.

Check the Outdoor Unit

  • Make sure the outdoor unit is running.
  • Remove debris, grass, or leaves around the unit.
  • Keep at least 2 feet of clearance around the equipment.
  • If the outdoor unit is covered in ice, turn the system OFF and contact us.

Check Vents & Airflow

  • Make sure all supply vents and return vents are open.
  • Replace blocked or closed vents.
  • Ensure furniture, rugs, or curtains are not restricting airflow.

Check for a Frozen System

Signs of a frozen system may include:

  • Ice on refrigerant lines
  • Ice on the indoor coil or outdoor unit
  • Weak airflow from vents

If you notice ice:

  • Turn the thermostat OFF.
  • Turn the fan setting to ON.
  • Allow the system to thaw completely.
  • Contact us for service.

Look for Error Codes or Warning Lights

  • Check the thermostat and indoor unit for flashing lights or error messages.
  • Take a photo of any code or message to share with our technician.

Restart the System

  • Turn the thermostat OFF.
  • Wait 1–2 minutes.
  • Turn the thermostat back to COOL.
  • Allow several minutes for the system to start cooling.

Call for Service If:

  • The system is blowing warm air.
  • The outdoor unit will not run.
  • The system freezes up repeatedly.
  • The breaker continues to trip.
  • You hear unusual noises.
  • Water is leaking around the furnace or air handler.
  • Your home will not cool properly.

Safety Reminder

Losing heat on a cold Indiana night is stressful, but sometimes, it’s caused by something simple. This checklist can help you rule out a few common problems before calling for service.

Before scheduling a heating service call, please review the checklist below. Many heating issues can be resolved with a quick adjustment.

Check the Thermostat

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to HEAT.
  • Raise the temperature setting at least 3–5 degrees above the current room temperature.
  • Replace thermostat batteries if the screen is blank or fading.
  • Confirm the thermostat display is working properly.

Check the Air Filter

  • Inspect the furnace filter.
  • A dirty or clogged filter can cause the system to shut down.
  • Replace the filter if it appears dirty.
  • Make sure the filter is installed in the correct airflow direction.

  • Check the furnace power switch (it often looks like a regular light switch near the furnace).
  • Make sure the switch is turned ON.
  • Check your electrical panel for any tripped breakers.
  • Reset tripped breakers one time only.

Check the Furnace Door

  • Ensure the furnace access panel/door is securely in place.
  • Many systems will not operate if the door safety switch is not engaged.

Check Gas Supply (Gas Furnaces Only)

  • Confirm the gas valve near the furnace is turned ON.
  • Make sure other gas appliances in the home are working.
If you smell gas:
  • Leave the home immediately.
  • Do NOT turn lights or appliances on/off.
  • Contact your gas company right away.

Check Vents & Registers

  • Make sure supply vents and return air vents are open and unobstructed.
  • Remove any furniture, rugs, or curtains blocking airflow.

Look for Error Codes

  • Check for blinking lights or error codes on the furnace control panel.
  • If possible, take a photo of the code to share with our technician.

Restart the System

  • Turn the thermostat OFF.
  • Wait 1–3 minutes.
  • Turn the thermostat back to HEAT and reset the temperature.
  • Allow the system several minutes to start.

Call for Service If:

  • The system still will not heat.
  • The furnace is blowing cold air.
  • You hear unusual noises.
  • The breaker continues to trip.
  • The furnace repeatedly turns on and off.
  • You smell burning odors or gas.
